Journalism is our main priority here at IMPACT. Through the art of the lens and pen, students are taught the skills they need to be successful. The entire curriculum of print news, broadcast, and research and development of their stories gives them a voice either they or their community may have never had before.

ABOUT

Digital Multimedia Exploration (D.M.E) is an apprenticeship program for Chicago-based high school students ages 14-19. D.M.E was established in the fall of 2005, as it would be the starting spark of IMPACT and the official partnership with After School Matters to provide a stipend-based program for teens.

D.M.E offers skills-based training in journalism, digital media, public relations, layout and design, and photography. The youth publish a news journal, then known as Our Voice: A Teen’s Perspective, as a platform to speak about pressing local and global issues of violence, community policing, education and employment to name a few. In recent years, the vision for the youth has transitioned from them predominately focusing on print journalism. The program is climbing to new heights with a radio podcast and a newscast in order for our youth to be skilled and knowledgeable of both fields of journalism.

They apply the knowledge they’ve learned from computer programs such as: Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Audition, and Adobe Premiere to host their podcast, create their magazine, and filter their newscast footage.

Within these 13 years, Digital Multimedia students are also exposed to different experiences most may have never had. The program also features field trips and guest speakers from media-related careers. Past trips involve visiting the NBC Tower, Museum of Broadcast Communications, and House of Blues to feature a mini-music reporting experience for our young aspiring artists.
